cial holidays, too, often to mark important events in its history.Schools, banks, and government offices all
close on days like these. ________ (46)A few of them are really very strange.

Global Warming
Few people now question the reality of global warming and its effects on the world's climate. Many scientists1the blame for recent natural disasters on the increase2the world's temperatures and are convinced that, more than3before,the Earth is at4from the forces of the wind, rain and sun.5to them, global warming is making extreme weather events,6as hurricanes and droughts, even more7and causing sea levels all around the world to8.
Environmental groups are putting9on governments to take action to reduce the 10 of carbon dioxide which is given 11 by factories and power plants, thus attacking the problem at its source. They are in12of more money being spent on research into so-lar,wind and wave energy devices, which could then replace existing power13.
Some scientists,14believe that even if we stopped releasing carbon dioxide and other gases into the atmosphere tomorrow,we would have to wait15hundred years to notice the results. Global warming,it seems,is here to stay.

Natural Medicines
Since earliest days, humans have used some kinds of medicines. We know this because humans have
survived.Ancient treatments for injury and disease were successful enough to keep humans from dying out
completely.
They were successful long before the time of modern medicine. Before the time of doctors with white
coats and shiny(发亮的)instruments. Before the time of big hospitals with strange and wonderful equipment.
Many parts of the world still do not have university-educated doctors. Nor do they have expensive hospi-
tals.Yet injuries are treated. And diseases are often cured. How?By ancient methods.By medicines that
might seem mysterious , even magical(有魔力的).Traditional medicines are neither mysterious nor magical,
however.
Through the centuries, tribal(部族的)medicine men experimented with plants. They found many use-
ful chemicals in the plants. And scientists believe many of these traditional medicines may provide the cure
for some of today's most serious diseases.
Experts say almost 80% of the people in the world use plants for health care. These natural medicines
are used not just because people have no other form of treatment. They are used because people trust them.
In developed areas, few people think about the source of the medicines they buy in a store.Yet many wide-
ly-used medicines are from ancient sources, especially plants. Some experts say more than 25% of modern
medicines come,in one way or another, from nature.
Scientists have long known that nature is really a chemical factory. All living things contain chemicals
that help them survive. So scientists' interest in traditional medicine is not new.But it has become an ur-
gent concern. This is because the earth's supply of natural medicines may be dropping rapidly.
What do the majority of the people in the world use for health care?
A:Strange and wonderful equipment.
B:Factory-produced chemicals.
C:Modern medicines.
D:Plants.

Explorer of the Extreme Deep
Oceans cover more than two-thirds of our planet.Yet,just a small fraction of the underwater world has been explored. Now,Scientists at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution(WHOI)in Massachusetts are building an underwater vehicle that will carry explorers as deep as 6,500 meters (21,325.5 feet). The new machine, known as a manned submersible or human-operated vehicle (HOV),will replace another one named Alvin which has an amazing record of discovery, playing a key role in various important and famous undersea expeditions.Alvin has been operating for 40 years but can go down only 4,500 meters(14,763.8 feet). It's about time for an upgrade,WHOI researchers say.
Alvin was launched in 1964.Since then,Alvin has worked between 200 and 250 days a year, says Daniel Fornari,a marine geologist and director of the Deep Ocean Exploration Institute at WHOI.During its lifetime,Alvin has carried some 12,000 people on a total of more than 3,000 dives.A newer, better versions of Alvin is bound to reveal even more surprises about a world that is still full of mysteries,Fornari says.It might also make the job of exploration a little easier."We take so much for granted on land."Fornari says."We can walk around and see with our eyes how big things are.We can see colors, special arrangements."
Size-wise,the new HOV will be similar to Alvin. It'll be about 37 feet long. The setting area inside will be a small sphere, about 8 feet wide, like Alvin. It'll carry a pilot and two passengers. It will be just as maneuverable. In most other ways,it will give passengers more opportunities to enjoy the view, for one thing. Alvin has only three windows, the new vehicle will have five, with more overlap so that the passengers and the pilot can see the same thing.
Alvin can go up and down at a rate of 30 meters every second, and its maximum speed is 2 knots(about 2.3 miles per hour),while the new vehicle will be able to ascend and descend at 44 meters per second. It'll reach speeds of 3 knots,or 3.5 miles per hour.
In what aspects are the new HOV and Alvin different?
A:Offering better views.
B:Speed.
C:Size.
D:Both A and B.

A Great Quake Coming?
Everyone who lives in San Francisco knows that earthquakes are common in the Bay Area一and they
can be devastating. In 1906,for example,a major quake destroyed about 28,000 buildings and killed
hundreds,perhaps thousands of people.Residents now wonder when the next"Big One"will strike.It's
bound to happen someday. At least seven active fault(断层)lines run through the San Francisco area. Faults
are places where pieces of Earth ' s crust(地壳)slide past each other. When these pieces slip , the ground
shakes.
To prepare for that day, scientists are using new techniques to reanalyze the 1906 earthquake and pre-
dict how bad the damage might be when the next one happens.
One new finding about the 1906 earthquake is that the San Andreas fault split apart faster than scientists
had assumed at the time. During small earthquakes, faults rupture(断裂)at about 2.7 kilometers per second.
During bigger quakes, however, ruptures can happen at rates faster than 3.5 kilometers per second.
At such high speeds, massive amounts of pressure build up,generating underground waves that can
cause more damage than the quake itself. Lucky for San Francisco , these pressure pulses(脉冲)traveled
away from the city during the 1906 event. As bad as the damage was,it could have been far worse.
Looking ahead, scientists are trying to predict when the next major quake will occur. Records show that
earthquakes were common before 1906.Since then, the area has been relatively quiet.Patterns in the data,
however, suggest that the probability of a major earthquake striking the Bay Area before 2032 is at least 62
percent.
New buildings in San Francisco are quite safe in case of future quakes.Still, more than 84 percent of the
city's buildings are old and weak.Analyses suggest that another massive earthquake would cause extensive
damage.
People who live there today tend to feel safe because San Francisco has remained pretty quiet for a
while.According to the new research, however,it's not a matter of"if" the Big One will hit. It's just a mat-
ter of when.
The highest speed of fault ruptures in the 1906 quake was more than 3.5 kilometers per second.

The Difference between Man and Computer
What makes people different from computer programs? What is the missing element that our theories don't yet1for?The answer is simple:People read newspaper stories for a reason:to learn more about2they are interested in. Computers,on the other hand, don't. In fact, computers don,t3have interests;there is nothing in particular that they are trying to find out when they read. If a computer4is to be a model of story understanding,it should also read for a“purpose”.
of course, people have several goals that do not make5to attribute to computers. One might read a restaurant guide6order to satisfy hunger or entertainment goals,or to 7a good place to go for a business lunch. Computers do not get hungry, and computers do not have business lunches.
However, these physiological and social goals give8to several intellectual or cognitive goals. A goal to satisfy hunger gives rise to goals to find9about the name of a restaurant which10the desired type of food, how expensive the restaurant is,the location of the restaurant, etc. These are goals to11information or knowledge, what we are call-ing12goals. These goals can be held by computers too;a computer13“want”to find out the location of a restaurant, and read a guide in order to do so14the same way as a person might. While such a goal would not15out of hunger in the case of the com-puter,it might well arise out of the“goal” to learn more about restaurants.

Energy Cycle
Do you find getting up in the morning so difficult that it's painful? This might be called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle.
During the hours when you labor through your work you may say that you're“hot”.That's true .The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak .For some people the peak comes during the morning. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so,but it leads to such familiar monologues as:“Get up,John! You'll be late for work again!”The possible explanation to the trouble is that John is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has.
You can't change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit to it better. Habit can help,Dr. Kleitman believes. Maybe you're sleepy in the evening but you must stay up late anyway .Counteract your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up later than you want to. If your energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won't change your cycle, but you'll get up steam and work better at your low point.
Get off to a slow start which saves your energy .Get up with a leisurely yawn and stretch.Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the trouble of searching for clean clothes by laying them out the night before .Whenever possible,do routine work in the afternoon and save tasks requiring more energy or concentration for your sharper hours.
Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE?
A: Getting off to work with a minimum effort helps save one's energy.
B: Dr. Kleitman explains why people reach their peak at different hours of day.
C: Habit helps a person adapt to his own energy cycle.
D: Children have energy cycles,too.

Longer Lives for Wild Elephants
Most people think of zoos as safe places for animals, where struggles such as having difficulty finding
food and avoiding predators(猛兽)don't exist. Without such problems, animals in zoos should live to a ripe
(成熟的)old age.
But that may not be true for the largest land animals on Earth.Scientists have known that elephants in
zoos often suffer from poor health.Sometimes, they even become unable to have babies.
To learn more about how captivity(圈养)affects elephants, a team of international scientists compared
the life spans of female elephants born in zoos with female elephants living outdoors in their native lands.
Zoos keep detailed records of all the animals in their care, documenting factors such as birth dates,illnes-
ses, weight and death. These records made it possible for the researchers to analyze 40 years of data on 800
African and Asian elephants in zoos across Europe. The scientists compared the life spans of the zoo-born fe-
male elephants with the life spans of thousands of wild female elephants in Africa and Asian elephants that
work in logging camps(伐木场), over approximately the same time period.
The team found that female African elephants born in zoos lived an average of 16.9 years. Their wild
counterparts who died of natural causes lived an average of 56 years一more than three times as long. Female
Asian elephants followed a similar pattern. In zoos, they lived 18.9 years, while those in the logging camps
lived 41.7 years.
Scientists don't know yet why wild elephants seem to get on so much better than their zoo-raised coun-
terparts.Georgia Mason,a biologist at the University of Guelph in Canada who led the study, thinks stress
and obesity(肥胖症)may be to blame. Zoo elephants don't get the same kind of exercise they would in the
wild, and most are very fat. Social lives of elephants are also much different in zoos than in the wild, where
they live in large herds and family groups.
The study raises some questions about acquiring more elephants to keep in zoos. While some threatened
and endangered species living in zoos reproduce(生殖)successfully and maintain healthy populations, that
doesn't appear to be the case with elephants.
One of the possible reasons for the zoo-raised elephants'problems is that______________.
A:they do not get proper food
B:they do too much exercise
C:they live in large herds
D:they do not live in family groups
He kept in contact with his family while he was in Australia.
A: gradual
B: regular

Mother Nature Shows Her Strength
Tornadoes(龙卷风)and heavy thunderstorms moved across the Great Lakes and into
Trumbull County on Saturday evening. The storms were dramatic and dangerous.
Georae Snyder was driving the fire truck down Route 88 when he first noticed that a
funnel(漏斗状的)cloud was behind him. "I stopped the truck and watched the tunnel
cloud. It was about 100 feet off the ground and I saw it go up and down for a while. It was
movina toward Bradley Road and then suddenly it disappeared,"Snyder said.
Snyder only saw one of the funnel clouds that passed through northeastern Ohio on
Saturday. In Trumbull County,a tornado turned trees onto their sides. Some trees fell onto
houses and cars.Other trees fell into telephone and electrical wires as they went down.
Amanda Symcheck was having a party when the storm began."I knew something was
wrong."she said."I saw the sky go green and pink(粉红色).Then it sounded like a train
rushing toward the house.I started crying and told everyone to go to the basement for
protection."
The tornado caused a lot of damage to cars and houses in the area.It will take a long
time and much money to repair everything. There was also serious water damage from the
thunderstorms. The heavy rains and high wind caused the power to go out in many homes.
The storms caused serious flooding in areas near the river. More than four inches of
rain fell in parts of Trumbull County. The river was so high that the water ran into streets
and houses. Many streets had to be closed to cars and trucks because of the high water.
This made it difficult for fire trucks, police cars and other rescue vehicles to help people who
were in trouble.
Many people who live near the river had to leave their homes for their own safety.
Some people reported five feet of water in their homes.Local and state officials opened
emergency shelters for the people who were evacuated(撤走).The Red Cross served
meals to them.
"This was a really intense storm,"said Snyder."People were afraid.Mother Nature
can be fierce. We were lucky this time.No one was killed."
Several people were missing during the storm.
